Technical Information - Aluminium Foils EN AW-1200 & EN AW-8079

Basic information and applications EN AW-1200 & EN AW-8079

Due to its low specific weight and good formability, aluminum can be used for a wide range of applications.

With the alloy EN-AW 8079, a higher tensile strength is achieved by adding iron and silicon. This alloy is therefore used for aluminum foils up to approximately 0.05 mm thick.

Because of the relatively good thermal conductivity, aluminum is also used for heat exchangers (however, alloys 3003 or 6063 should be used for soldered heat exchangers).

Thanks to its high electrical conductivity, aluminum can also be used in the electrical industry.

Further application examples: reflectors in lamps, construction (roofs made of aluminum sheets), packaging (e.g. beverage cans).

The material is not approved as a spring material.

Delivery Condition

Structure: cold rolled, not hardenable

Surface: glossy, roughness Ra maximum 0.3 µm (impression of the work roll)

Tensile strength: > 150 N / mm²

Tolerances

Thickness tolerance: +/- 10% of the thickness

Width tolerance: normal

Straightness: normal

Flatness: wave height max. 1.0 mm

Mechanical Details

Yield strength Rp0.2: dependent on tensile strength

Elongation A 80: depending on the tensile strength

Aluminum should not be used for springs.

Please note that the elastic modulus values decrease with increasing temperature.

Processing information EN AW-1200 & EN AW-8079

Punching: The cutting gap should correspond to approximately 4-10% of the strip thickness. The corner radii should be at least 0.25 and the punch diameter at least twice the tape thickness.

Laser cutting: This material can be laser cut very well.

Etching: The material is very easy to etch.

Bending: Soft annealed aluminum foils can be bent and bent without restrictions.

In the hard-rolled condition, the following minimum bending radii should be taken into account (see DIN EN 485-2, Table 4):

Up to a thickness of 0.20 mm: 1.0 x strip thickness for bends perpendicular to the rolling direction, approx. 2.0 x strip thickness for bends parallel to the rolling direction (details are missing in DIN EN 485-2)

Surface grinding and polishing: Since aluminum cannot be magnetized, it cannot be held on magnetic chucks. Aluminum can only be polished poorly.

Welding: Aluminum can be welded very well with MIG or TIG.

Chemical resistance EN AW-1200 & EN AW-8079

A permanent aluminum oxide layer passivates the metal against environmental influences. However, this oxide layer is quickly dissolved in a very acidic and very alkaline environment. Aluminum is also resistant to sea water.

When in contact with unalloyed steels, rust stains can impair the visual appearance of aluminum. Electrical isolation is also advisable for copper and copper alloys.

However, contact with rust-resistant steels is not a problem.
